Nigeria Confirms 338 New COVID-19 Cases, Toll of Infections Near 6,000
Nigeria has confirmed 338 new cases of the novel coronavirus, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
In a tweet on its official handle late Sunday, the NCDC said Lagos had recorded 177 new cases, while Kano posted 64 cases.
Other regions with latest cases include the FCT with 21, Rivers with 16, Plateau with 14, Oyo 11, Katsina nine, Jigawa and Kaduna with four each, and three cases from the trio of Abia, Bauchi, and Borno.
Gombe, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states also confirmed two new cases each, while Kebbi and Sokoto shared two cases between them.
Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, national coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Sani Aliyu, said President Muhammadu Buhari is set to address Nigerians on Monday over the Corona Virus pandemic.
While some are anticipating for the President to further relax lockdown measures caused by the virus, COVID-19 cases have continued to increase across the country.

Ekiti Sends Delegates to Edo to Understudy Edo BEST
As the success story of the Edo BEST initiative continues to resonate across the length and breadth of the country and beyond, the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), recently played host to a delegation from Ekiti State whose objective was to understudy the Edo BEST initiative and its success story in order to replicate same in Ekiti.
The delegation which was led by Mr. Familoni F.A, Director, Science, Technology and Mathematics, Ministry of Education, Ekiti State, were taken on a tour to public primary schools in the State for a first hand assessment of the impact, practicality and effectiveness of Edo BEST. Amongst the schools visited were Adesuwa primary School and Oghobaye Primary School, in Oredo and Ikpoba Okha LGAs respectively.
Welcoming the delegates, the Executive Chairman, Edo SUBEB, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, noted that the whole journey began when the Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, decided to re-enact the tenets of basic education in the State in a bid to provide a solid education model for pupils of public primary schools in Edo State.
According to Dr. Oviawe, “The pillars of Edo BEST have helped greatly in improving basic education in the State. The Teacher Professional Development programme has been greatly improved upon as our teachers have been trained in the used of modern teaching techs and also equipped with mobile computer gadgets and smartphones to aid the teaching and learning process. So far, over ten thousand, five hundred (10,500) teachers have been trained in digital pedagogy and other modern teaching techniques with more than 450 education managers trained as well.”
Dr. Oviawe also stressed on the fruitful partnership between the State Government and the communities hosting Edo BEST schools as about 11,628 School Based Management Committee (SBMC) members have been trained so far.
Speaking, a field officer from Ikpoba Okha, Mrs Erhabor Osasumwen who covers 20 schools, stressed that her duty as a Learning and Development Officer involves mentoring and supporting teachers to achieve the desired results. According to Mrs Erhabor, “Through the help of field officers Edo BEST is able to sensitize the community on the need to send their children to school and also attain quality and standards”
Responding, the leader of the delegation, Mr. Familoni F.A., noted that they were satisfied with the level of professionalism displayed by the teachers in public primary schools in Edo State. According to Mr. Familoni, “Even schools in the rural areas have the same Pattern of delivery both in teaching and learning activities”. He emphasized that they are happy to be in Edo State and are willing to replicate Edo BEST in Ekiti State.
The leader of a UBEC TV documentary team, Mr Ossom Ossom, who was privy to be in attendance, stressed that Edo state caught the attention of UBEC, through the success story of Edo BEST. “Edo State was chosen by UBEC to showcase the achievements of UBEC across the 36 States in the country and the FCT as a result of its success story with the Edo BEST scheme”, Mr Ossom noted.
The Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki is advancing and transforming the basic education sub-sector to meet with global standards and over two hundred thousand (200,000) pupils of public primary schools in the State are currently benefiting by this initiative.

Nigeria Records 288 New COVID-19 Cases, Total Infections Now 5,445
Nigeria has recorded 288 new cases of the novel coronavirus, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
In a tweet via its official handle late Friday, the NCDC said 179 new cases had been discovered in Lagos, the country’s hotspot.
In Kaduna, 20 new cases were recorded, 15 each in both Katsina and Jigawa, 13 in Borno, 11 in Ogun, eight in Kano, seven in the FCT, four each in Niger and Ekiti, three each in Oyo, Delta and Bauchi, two in Kwara and one in Edo.
The health agency also noted that the number of recovered cases had jumped from 1,180 on Thursday to 1,320, while the death toll increased by four to 171.

Nigerian Officials Putting their Signature on Loan Documents Written In Chinese Language, Lawmaker Claims
A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Ben Ibakpa has made insincere some Nigerian officials signed loan documents from China written in the Chinese language.
Mr Ibakpa said this on Thursday when he briefed on Channels Television’s breakfast show, Sunrise Daily, stating that the National Assembly is not beared along when the country takes loans from China.
He said that some Nigerian officials do not logically look into the loan documents before putting their signature, adding that, “Some of these documents come in the Chinese language”
According to the member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, the National Assembly has been kept in dullness before now concerning the Chinese loans.
“The National Assembly is kept in the dark in all these loans. The National Assembly is not part of it. Even the Bureau for Public Procurement is not aware of these loans.
“These loans are collected via the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). They bring a bill, the Federal executive approves the bill,” the lawmaker said.
While disclosing that the National Assembly may have made so serious mistakes in the past the years, he added that things need to be and can be corrected now.
Speaking regarding the 2020 budget, Ibakpa said little is known about how the money is been used.
“We are talking about over N2 trillion appropriated for debt servicing. We appropriate and we don’t know how this money is being spent. That is why we need to look into what has been happening since 2002.”

Kano State in Nigeria Quarantines Over 2000 Almajiris
Kano state government in Nigeria has quarantined over 2000 Almajiris to restraint the escalation of COVID-19 in the state, the second focal point of the virus after Lagos State.
The Kano state Commissioner of Health Ibrahim Tsanyawa made this known to Channels Television that a team of quick response experts have been coached to manage the Almajiris at their quarantine centres.
Mr Tsanyawa made known that the trainees were chosen from medical doctors, nurses, community health workers and laboratory scientists to check and screen the Almajiris at their camps in Kiru, Gabasawa and Karaye Local Government Areas of the state.

EFCC Take Into Custody Two Chinese For handing out N100m Bribe To Top Officials
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken into custody two Chinese for handing out the sum of N100m as bribe to the Zonal head of the anti-graft agency in Sokoto State, Mr Abdullahi Lawal.
The agency made this known in a series of tweets on Tuesday, bearing in mind that the arrest was made on Monday in Sokoto.
As said by the EFCC, the sum was reportedly offered in a desolate bid to compromise ongoing investigations of a construction company, China Zhonghao Nig. Ltd, which was manipulating contracts awarded by the Zamfara State Government in the sum of N50,000,000,000.00 (fifty billion naira) between 2012 to 2019.
“The zonal office of the Commission is investigating the construction company, in connection with the execution of contracts for the construction of township roads in Gummi, Bukkuyun, Anka and Nassarawa towns of Zamfara state; and also the construction of one hundred and sixty-eight (168) solar-powered boreholes in the 14 local government areas of the state.
“Alarmed by the consistency and professionalism of investigation being conducted, the company reached out to Lawal with an offer of N100,000,000(One Hundred Million Naira) as bribe to “bury” the matter,” the statement read.
It, nonetheless, noted that in a magnificent design to get hold of the corrupt officials, Lawal played along.
“On Monday, two representatives of the company Meng Wei Kun and Xu Kuoi offered him cash totalling fifty million naira in their office along airport road, Sokoto. The cash was offered as a first installment”.
But the suspects were promptly arrested with the cash as evidence.

Nigeria Confirms 242 New COVID-19 Cases, Toll of infections Now 4,641
Nigeria has confirmed 242 new cases of the novel coronavirus, bringing the country’s total infections to 4,641.
In a tweet late Monday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 88 new cases in Lagos, 64 in Kano, 49 in Katsina and 13 in Kaduna.
As said by the health agency, Ogun state had nine cases, Gombe six, Adamawa four, and the FCT three.
Six other states – Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Zamfara, Borno, and Bauchi – reported one case each.

We Are Trying out Sample Of Madagascar Cure To See How It Works – Nigeria Health Minister
Nigeria Health Minister Osagie Ehanire has disclosed plans by the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Health to get the Madagascar herbal cure for COVID-19.
The Minister make this known on Monday while orienting journalists at the Presidential Task Force briefing on COVID-19.
He made known that the plan is to get the herbal product and subject it to analysis to see how it works and how it is used.
“Concerning the question on the cure from Madagascar, this has been making the news and we have the promise of being able to get a sample of the herb/botanical product for analysis and also probably use that opportunity to speak with the health authorities particularly the scientific community on how they use it.
“We will also give that to the research community with us here (in Nigeria) to examine and do what they can do with it.
” We will like to compare the sample with the strain here in our country whether they are identical or similar and see what properties it has. Things like that are normally subjected to analysis to find out how it works,” Ehanire said.
The Minister outstretched that all countries are interested in finding a cure to the deadly COVID-19 and Nigeria is also looking at all available options.
He add on that before the Madagascar cure can be used in Nigeria, it will be examined, “to make sure they are safe and they work.”

State Governor of Nigeria El-Rufai Confirms Two More COVID-19 Deaths In Kaduna State
Kaduna State has confirmed two more deaths from the coronavirus pandemic.
The state governor, Nasir El Rufai, disclosed this in a late-night tweet on Saturday that the casualties were confirmed in Makarfi and Zaria Local Government Areas of the state.
He elucidated that the deaths involved a senior citizen from Makarfi and a lady from Zaria.
Governor El-Rufai also make known that two more persons have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of active cases in Kaduna state to 87.
As said by him, the two new cases include a male from Igabi and a female from Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna.
The state confirmed its initial death from COVID-19 on May 2 – a pensioner civil servant.
The victim was said to have obscured his travel history to Kano and died before the result of his test came out.
This brings the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the state of Kaduna to three now.
