GAMBIA IMMIGRATION DENIES TAKING BRIBES FOR PASSENGERS TO ESCAPE QUARANTINE
Days after a blacklash under a barrage accusation for reportedly taking bribes to let arriving passengers escape quarantine, the Gambia Immigration Department has clear deny the allegations.
According to Standard, “travellers coming into the country are required to be placed under mandatory quarantine or self-isolation for 14 days to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
However, there have been widespread allegations that Immigration officers ask for bribes from incoming passengers to allow them to jump the mandatory quarantine.”
The Standard raised this issue with the public relations officer of the Immigration Department, Superintendent Mamanding Dibba, who clearly denied that it would be impossible for anyone to escape at the airport.
”The security strategy and measures at the Banjul airport in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic are at their highest levels, and it would have to take miracles for any officer to aid and abate people escape quarantine. When the allegation first emerged, the GID high command swiftly intervened and deployed anonymous and undercover security officers to the airport to launch an investigation and check for themselves. But so far, what is clear is that the allegations are baseless and fabrications,” Dibba told The Standard.
“The operations conducted at the Banjul International Airport during Covid-19 make it impossible for any immigration officer to have a chance of helping passengers to escape quarantine contrary to the rumours that are making rounds on social media,” he added. The PRO said even at the best of times, security is such that it would be hard for any such practice to occur.
He stated in 2005 International Health Regulations put forward responsibility for the management of communicable diseases at the airports under the national public health authority.
“But since migration is a key determinant of public health with a lot of cases being imported, the GID has been working closely with the Ministry of Health at all entry and exit points including the Banjul Airport.

BBC disclosed the death of Daisy Coleman, a sexual assault victim advocate and subject of the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy, has committed suicide, according to her mother.
Ms Coleman, 23, was 14 years old when she disclosed of been raped at a party in 2012 in Maryville, Missouri.
Her case drew a lot of attention as she spoke of being bullied after the occurrence, but the charge against the teenage boy she accused was dropped later on.
BBC said, she was reportedly found dead after her mother called police to check on her.
“She was my best friend and amazing daughter,” her mother, Melinda Coleman, wrote on Facebook.
“I think she had to make it seem like I could live without her. I can’t.
“I wish I could have taken the pain from her! She never recovered from what those boys did to her and it’s just not fair. My baby girl is gone.”
Ms Coleman alleged she was assaulted while intoxicated by a 17-year-old boy, Matthew Barnett, at a house party in January 2012, when she was 14.
Her mother said she found her daughter the next morning, left outside on the porch, with wet hair and wearing just a T-shirt and sweatpants in sub-zero temperatures.
Barnett was charged with felony sexual assault, but the case was eventually dropped. Ms Coleman’s family argued this was due to the local political connections of the boy’s family.
Barnett pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of child endangerment, arguing his sexual intercourse with Daisy had been consensual.

Angry inhabitants demand answers after blast
Inhabitants in Beirut have put forward their anger at the government over what they say was ‘negligence’ that led to Tuesday’s huge explosion in China.
According to BBC, President Michel Aoun said the explosion was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate kept unsafely in a warehouse.
Dozens have accused the authorities of corruption, neglect and mismanagement.
The blast killed at least 137 people and injured about 5,000 others, while dozens are still missing. A two-week state of emergency has begun.
“Beirut is crying, Beirut is screaming, people are hysterical and people are tired,” filmmaker Jude Chehab told the BBC, calling for the people responsible to face justice.
Chadia Elmeouchi Noun, a Beirut resident currently in hospital, said: “I’ve known all the time that we are led by incompetent people, incompetent government […] But I tell you something – what they have done now is absolutely criminal.”
On Wednesday, the government announced that a number of Beirut port officials were placed under house arrest pending an investigation into the explosion.
The country’s Supreme Defence Council insisted that those found responsible would face the “maximum punishment”.
For now, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for an independent investigation into the blast. In a statement, HRW said it had “serious concerns about the ability of the Lebanese judiciary to conduct a credible and transparent investigation on its own”.

Channels TV said, the presidency has denied reports suggesting that repentant Boko Haram terrorists are being placed into the Nigerian military.
According to Channel TV, in a statement issued yesterday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, says no ex-terrorist is absorbed into the Nigerian military.
This escalation was due to an allegation made by Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum that his convoy was attacked by soldiers and not Boko Haram terrorists
Following this development, many Nigerians had suggested on social media that the attack was carried out by the repentant insurgents who had allegedly joined the army.
“It is important for the public to know that nobody has ever been absorbed into the military from the de-radicalized Boko Haram and there is no such plan for their absorption,” the statement partly read.
The presidential spokesman explained that the Federal Government’s Operation Safe Corridor programme aimed at rehabilitating the ex-terrorists were being monitored by the International Organisation for Migration.
“None of the 601 former Boko Haram members who voluntarily laid down their arms, and have recently graduated from the Federal Government’s de-radicalization and rehabilitation programme, is going into the military.
“This is the fourth such graduation of repentant Boko Haram fighters and not one of such graduates has been absorbed into the military.
“The public needs to be reassured that the de-radicalization, rehabilitation and reintegration of violent extremists of the Buhari administration code-named “Operation Safe Corridor,” follows an established example from countries with similar experiences, and is supported academically and materially by the European Union and the United Nations,” he said.
