Public gathering ban lifted after days of protest in Thailand

By Amie T. Camara

Afrinity Production unveil the lifting of the banning of public gathering in Thailand, after an emergency decree failed to end mass anti-government protests across the country.

BBC said a government statement said it was revoking the measures as the “serious situation” had eased.

The move comes after protesters gave Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha three-days to step down or face more rallies.

Thailand has now faced months of large democracy protests targeting the premier and the king.

The student-led movement is demanding the resignation of Mr Prayuth, a former general who seized power in a 2014 coup and last year became prime minister after a controversial vote.

They want a new election, amendments to the constitution, and an end to the harassment of state critics.

They are also demanding curbs on the king’s powers – a call that has led to unprecedented public discussion of an institution shielded from criticism by law.

Trump and Obama mock each other in rival rallies

By Amie T. Camara

Afrinity Production draw attention to US President Donald Trump and his predecessor, Barack Obama, who have directed blistering attacks at each other during rival rallies.

Campaigning for Democratic White House nominee Joe Biden in Pennsylvania, Mr Obama likened Mr Trump to a “crazy uncle” and said he emboldened racists.

In North Carolina, the Republican president mocked Mr Obama for being wrong about the 2016 election outcome.

With 13 days to go until this election, Mr Biden holds a solid lead nationally.

But the margin is slimmer in the handful of US states that could go either way and ultimately decide the outcome on 3 November.

Diallo says he won round one, election body says no

By Amie T. Camara

Afrinity Production draw attention to Guinean opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo who says he has won the first round of a high-stakes presidential election, prompting the country’s election body, which has yet to publish results, to call his self-declared victory “void”.

“Despite the serious anomalies that marred the smooth running of the … election and in view of the results that came out of the ballot boxes, I am victorious in this election in the first round,” Diallo told journalists and cheering supporters on Monday, a day after the vote was held.

“I invite all my fellow citizens who love peace and justice to stay vigilant and committed to defend this democratic victory,” he said.

Outside the building in the capital, Conakry, supporters erupted in joy and chanted “Cellou, president”. Elsewhere in the city, security forces fired tear gas canisters at crowds assembling in support of Diallo.

The opposition leader did not give any figures but said the tally was based on his party’s count, not an official tally being conducted by the national election commission.

Later on Monday, Bakary Mansare, vice president of the electoral authority, told the AFP news agency Diallo’s purported victory was “premature” and “void”.

“It is not up to a candidate or a person to proclaim himself the winner outside the bodies defined by the law,” he said.

Diallo, 68, is the main challenger to Guinea’s 82-year-old incumbent President Alpha Conde, who is seeking a third term in office after a constitutional change in March.

No SARS Officer Will Be Part Of New Tactical Team – Police

By Amie T. Camara

Afrinity Production reliably unvel the statement by the police in Nigeria, saying that no member of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) will be a part of the newly constituted Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.

Due to a very intense protest that has lasted for days, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, dissolved the infamous subunit of the force, SARS.

Two days after disbanding SARS, the IGP set up a SWAT unit, however, this move did not go down well with those who had protested for the dissolution of the anti-robbery squad, causing them to change the mantra from #EndSARS to #EndSWAT.

The call for the disbanding of the new unit is hinged on the arguments suggesting that the decision to immediately replace SARS operatives with SWAT is hasty and unpremeditated.

In a bid to throw more light on the new unit set up by the IGP, the police put out a statement via Twitter stating what their mandate will be, however, rather than refer to them as SWAT, police spokesman Frank Mba who put out the statement used the phrase ‘Tactical Team’.

It is unclear if the Police have changed the name of the newly constituted unit from SWAT to Tactical Team, but the spokesman said no operative of SARS will be included in the new team.
