Karpowership energy company donates five ventilators value about D6 million to the Government of The Gambia.

Presenting the medical equipment at State House, Vice President Isatou Touray, the chairperson of the Covid-19 Ministerial Committee, thanks Karpowership for its “timely assistance”and said the ventilators will greatly help the health ministry’s comeback in fighting the flu pandemic.

A highly-placed source at the ministry told standard that there are about 20 ventilators in the country. Nonetheless, the source could not make it clear whether that number includes the five donated by Karpowership which had arrived in the country lately.

Vice President Touray noted that Covid-19 is a pandemic requiring a lot of mechanism and as such, government could not do it alone. “Karpowership takes its corporate social responsibility seriously and this is what is expected and we thank you for helping the government and the people of The Gambia for your great intervention,” she concluded.

Mr Ceesay a former permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health, said a ventilator takes over the body’s breathing process when disease caused the lungs to fail.

‘He said according to the WHO, 80 percent of people with the Covid-19 disease are cured without needing hospital treatment but one person in six becomes seriously ill.
In these severe cases, he noted, the virus causes damage to the lungs, causing the body’s oxygen levels to drop and make it harder to breathe.’

Trump and his objective to win a second term lay open in Michigan visit

President Donald Trump’s tarnishing of fact, divide-and-rule strategy and endless gain for new political enemies may be catastrophic in a pandemic.

But such behavior, combined with the promise of an American comeback, still adds up to a formidable electoral arsenal.

‘The President gave every impression Thursday of battling for his political life during a visit to Michigan, a state that crystallizes the themes of his bid for a second term and that could be decisive in his clash with Democrat Joe Biden. It was his most explicit display yet of his plans to beat treacherous pandemic politics and criticism of his leadership in pursuit of an even more logic-busting victory than in 2016.’

Trump mainly used the trip to present himself as the champion of an economic rebuilder and of millions of Americans who lost jobs, portraying Democrats as adding to the desperation of shut-out workers.

“A permanent lockdown is not a strategy for a healthy state or a healthy country. To protect the health of our people we must have a functioning economy,” Trump said, implicitly discounting arguments of critics who say it’s not yet safe to reopen.

“Americans who want and need to return to work should not be vilified — they should be supported,” Trump said, lashing out at journalists and politicians who can work from home.

Trump also touches his central campaign goals, bragging about his new trade deals, spreading his effort to use China as a scapegoat for not stopping a pandemic he himself had ignored and commemorating the border wall that is crucial to his bond with his claim supporters.

And he took a new approach at Biden’s mental capacity, identifying the former vice president “a Democrat that doesn’t even know where he is.” And even before he left the White House, Trump remit yet another lemon to his evangelical supporters, then followed up in Michigan.

China to Suggest exceptionally arguable national security law in Hong Kong

China will put forward a great disputable national security law for Hong Kong, in what could be the biggest blow to the city’s autonomy and civil liberties since its render to Chinese rule in 1997.

‘The move by China’s rubber stamp parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), which is meeting in Beijing this week, is sure to fuel further anger and protests in the city, which was rocked by over six months of increasingly violent anti-government unrest last year.’

The law, which is anticipated to disallow sedition, ‘secession’ and ‘subversion’ of the central government in Beijing, will be put into existence through a uniquely used constitutional method that could effectively bypass Hong Kong’s legislature.

News of the plans was met with instant backlash by opposition lawmakers in Hong Kong, human rights groups and the US State Department.

US man who recorded Arbery shooting video Indict for murder

The United States man who recorded mobile phone video footage of Ahmaud Arbery’s tragic shooting in the state of Georgia was taken into custody on Thursday and indicted for murder in his death.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said 50-year-old William “Roddie” Bryan was taken into custody on charges of ‘felony’ murder and criminal venture to commit false imprisonment.

‘Arbery, an unarmed black man, was killed on February 23 after a white father and son armed themselves and pursued him after spotting the 25-year-old man running in their neighbourhood. More than two months passed before authorities arrested Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault.’

Bryan lives in the same section, and the video he took from the cab of his vehicle helped stir a huge backlash when it leaked online. Bryan’s lawyer, Kevin Gough, did not immediately return a phone message.

Gregory McMichael, a former investigator for the local district attorney, told police he thought Arbery was a burglar. He said Arbery assaulted his son before he was shot.

Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, has said she knows well her son was simply out jogging.

‘Arrests In Sukuta After Clashes With Demolition Squad’

Some 14 people were taken into custody in Sukuta last evening after clashing with a demolition squad sent to implement a Physical Planning order on a land located in Salagi.

Among those taken into custody were activist Fatou Jaw Manneh and singer Mbi Kuru, both natives of Sukuta.

A few weeks before the tension emerged, few people staged a protest after receiving letters from the Department of Physical Planning asking them to stop all constructions on the land as it is a state land mainly reserve for schools, hospitals, markets and cemetery.

Nonetheless, the villagers were not in support of this as they raise complains of not seen any such development but by contrast private people, mostly senior government officials, have put up houses on the land.

*The villagers, mainly from the Jamba Kunda clan, claimed the government of former president Jammeh took the said land from them in Salagi but after a long battle, they reclaimed some of the tracts which they divided among original land-owning clans who allocated plots to family members, some of which have been developed.*

They said they were over it and also concluded that the matter has been resolved only to receive a visitation recently from officials of the Department of Physical Planning, who gave out letters ordering for them to stop all developments and leave the land as it belongs to the state.

The villagers refuses to comply with this and yesterday, a demolition squad accompanied by police came at the scene and managed to push down a number of structures. Their presence lead to a public confrontation with the villagers resulting in the arrests.

Another source confirmed that they have been charged with obstructing police officers but the villagers reportedly rejected the charges and refused to give any statement at the Brusbi police station.

Standard reporter Mafugi Ceesay, who was briefly taken into custody along with the protesters, was released shortly afterwards.
