Human error Caused Pakistan Plane Crash That Killed 97 – Report

A plane crash which killed 97 people in Pakistan last month was because of human error by the pilot and air traffic control, according to an initial report into the disaster released Wednesday.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane came down among houses on May 22 after both engines failed as it approached Karachi airport, killing all but two people on board.

“The pilot as well as the controller didn’t follow the standard rules,” the country’s aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan said, announcing the findings in parliament.

He said the pilots had been discussing the coronavirus pandemic as they attempted to land the Airbus A320.

“The pilot and co-pilot were not focused and throughout the conversation was about coronavirus,” Khan said.

The Pakistani investigation team, which included officials from the French government and the aviation industry, analysed data and voice recorders.

The minister said the plane was “100 percent fit for flying, there was no technical fault”.

The county’s deadliest aviation accident in eight years came days after domestic commercial flights resumed following a two-month coronavirus lockdown.

Can dexamethasone treat COVID-19?: Doctors Notes

With the coronavirus escalating on the world and economies grinding to a standstill, the concern is to find a vaccine to cure it.

While that could take up to 18 months, existing drugs are being fast-tracked to see if they can be effective in treating people with the disease and helping save lives.

With about 14 percent of COVID-19 patients needing to be hospitalised for respiratory problems, effective treatments are desperately needed.

Researchers are looking at certain drugs in particular, including lopinavir-ritonavir (also called Kaletra), used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). Other researchers have meanwhile trialled the steroid dexamethasone, which has yielded some promising results.
A recent announcement by a research team at Oxford University, England allowed for a glimmer of hope in what can only be described as a dark few months.

The drug dexamethasone had been trialled on around 2,000 patients who required hospital treatment as a result of COVID-19. The drug was shown to significantly reduce the number of deaths among those seriously ill with the coronavirus, so much so that the results have been fast-tracked and shared with the wider medical profession so other countries can benefit from these positive findings.

Dexamethasone is a steroid-based medication. It has long been used in the treatment of common conditions such as croup in children, asthma exacerbations, rheumatoid arthritis and for some conditions that cause brain swelling.

Part of the way it works is by suppressing the immune system. What we do know about patients that suffer the worst complications of COVID-19, such as breathing difficulties, is that their own immune system over- responds to the virus, so as well as attacking infected cells it also attacks healthy cells such as those found in the lungs.

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic tests positive for coronavirus

World’s number one in men’s tennis player, Novak Djokovic, has tested positive for Covid-19 after taking part in a tennis exhibition series he organised in Serbia and Croatia.

The top-ranked Serb is one of the fourth players to test positive for the pandemic after first playing in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, and then again last weekend in Zadar, Croatia. His wife also tested positive.

“The moment we arrived in Belgrade we went to be tested. My result is positive, just as Jelena’s, while the results of our children are negative,” Djokovic said in a statement on Tuesday.

Djokovic has been backlash for organising the Adria Tour and bringing in players from other countries amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Some of the Croatian newspaper headlines read on Tuesday: “We forgot Italy and jeopardised thousands of people because someone wanted to hit the ball”, “The entire Croatian tennis association must resign, now”, and “This may shake Djokovic’s credibility”.

Organization paid for the Release of a teenager charged of killing her alleged sex trafficker

A Wisconsin teenager charged of killing her alleged sex trafficker was released from jail Monday on $400,000, according to the organization that paid for her jail release.

Chrystul Kizer, 19, had been jailed close two years since being charged in connection with the June 2018 death of Randall P. Volar III, according to the Chicago Community Bond Fund.

“We are elated to know Chrystul will no longer be locked in a cage simply for wanting to live,” the bond fund said in a statement. “No one should be incarcerated for surviving violence against them.”

Kizer, who is Black, was allegedly trafficked by Volar, who was White, beginning when she was 16 years old, the bond fund said.

Kizer maintains that Volar’s death was the result of self-defense, the fund said.

“Far too often, survivors of violence — especially Black women and girls — are punished for defending themselves,” the statement said. “Chrystul’s case highlights the urgent need for the criminal legal system to stop prosecuting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.”

Kizer is facing first-degree intentional homicide and four other felony charges, according to Kenosha County court records.

Her original $1 million bond was curtail to $400,000 in February, according to court records. Her bond was signed Monday and posted Tuesday.

When Kizer’s case ends, the bond money will be used to establish a national fund for survivors of domestic and sexual violence facing charges, the statement said.

Earthquake in Mexico kills at least five and causes severe panic

A strong earthquake has shaken buildings and caused severe panic in six Mexican states, killing not less than five people.

Dozens were working from home as the capital, Mexico City, is under lockdown due to the Covid-19.

But the government’s alert system worked well, giving inhabitants time to leave their homes.

The focal point of the quake, with a magnitude of 7.4, was in the south-western state of Oaxaca.

All of the reported fatalities were from the state on the country’s Pacific coast.

It comes less than three years after an earthquake left hundreds dead and thousands homeless in Mexico City.

About 200 houses in the tourist town of La Crucecita were damaged on Tuesday, a local official said.

“We lost everything in one moment to nature,” Vicente Romero, an owner of a stationary shop told the Reuters news agency. “This is our life’s work.”

Rescue workers have not yet been able to access isolated villages reportedly hit, raising fears that more could have been injured.

Six hours after the quake, more than 400 aftershocks had been recorded across the region, the strongest at 4.6 magnitude.
