Gambia to benefit from £20M climate change funding

President Adama Barrow yesterday announced that The Gambia through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources will benefit from an initial disbursement of £20 million donated by the government of Canada on climate related problems.

In his State of the Nation’s Address at the National Assembly, the President revealed that sector personnel are now working with the International Institute for Environment and Development the Least Developed Countries’ Initiative for Effective Adaptation and Resilience Project for implementation.

“It is geared towards ensuring that 70% of climate finance reaches the intended communities, with four other countries,” the President said.

He added that a project of US$45 million under the West Africa Coastal Area Management funded by the World Bank was also approved in December 2022 for The Gambia.

“The project is meant to reduce climate-related disasters, such as flooding in the urban area,” he elaborated. “Correspondingly, a 6.9 million Euro project, funded by the French Development Agency, was approved late last year. Its main objective is to support five marine protected areas and the communities around them.”

The President underlined that the “Ministry looks forward this year to enacting” the Biodiversity/Wildlife Bill and the CITES Bill.

“They are at the Ministry of Justice for legal review,” he said, adding: “In the same vein, review of the Biodiversity and Wildlife Policy and the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2015-2020) has commenced. Further, the Wetland Policy will be developed, and efforts stepped up to fulfill The Gambia’s international obligations.”

Borrow also said: “In fulfilling government’s obligation of domesticating international laws and conventions and to strengthen the sector’s management and regulatory frameworks, three important bills have been formulated, namely the National Environment Management Bill, the Chemical Control and Management Bill, and the Waste Management Bill. They are under review for submission to this Assembly thereafter.”

In view of the alarming rate of coastal erosion and other environmental concerns, President Barrow said his administration would adopt measures to promote the integrated approach to coastal zone management and address emerging challenges.

“The enactment of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Bill will strengthen these measures,” he said.

“On general environmental quality regulation and management to enhance the wellbeing of Gambians, I have reintroduced the voluntary monthly national cleansing exercise, Set’settal. I urge everyone to take it seriously and participate in it.”

NEWSFuel subsidy removal: I feel your pain, sacrifice a little more – Tinubu begs Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has admitted that the recent removal of fuel subsidy has imposed hardship on the general public.

Tinubu said in his maiden Democracy Day address to Nigerians on Monday that though he feels the pain on the masses, there is a need for them to sacrifice more for the betterment of the entire nation.

According to the president, the temporal discomfort occasioned by the subsidy removal was necessary to save the country from going under.

He said, “I feel your pain. This is one decision we must bear to save our country from going under and take our resources away from the stranglehold of a few unpatriotic elements.

“I admit that the decision will impose an extra burden on the masses of our people. Painfully, I have asked you, my compatriots, to sacrifice a little more for the survival of our country”.

Champions League final: Who can Man City join as treble winners by beating Inter Milan?

Manchester City will join Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, PSV, Ajax, Celtic and Inter as the only treble winners across Europe if they beat the Nerazzurri on Saturday; of the nine trebles in history, five have come since 2009

Man City can become just the eighth European club to win a continental treble by beating Inter on Saturday. What kind of company will they be keeping?

In European history, only seven teams have won the European Cup, as well as their domestic top flight and premier cup competition – but it is becoming more common.

Prior to that, Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous Manchester United side of 1999 had been the only team since Guus Hiddink’s PSV some 11 years earlier to have won all three trophies in the same season.

Here’s the full roll call of teams Manchester City would be joining – and how those previous history makers managed it.

When Hansi Flick took over Bayern Munich in November 2019 he inherited an ailing team who had underperformed under Niko Kovac, his former boss. Less than a year later, he had won everything with them. Nineteen wins and a draw from their final 20 Bundesliga matches marked an astonishing run of domestic form to win the league at a canter, and they made light work of Europe too.

Gambia: opposition holds rally against corruption

Gambian protesters are gathering to march against corruption through the capital Banjul after a youth group affiliated with the main opposition party called for a demonstration.

Lawyer Ousainu Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), in a WhatsApp audio had earlier called on supporters to be peaceful ahead of a corruption demonstration slated for Friday.

The UDP Youth Wing recently applied for a police permit for a peaceful procession against corruption. This came after several corruption allegations were reported about government institutions and other local government councils.

Lawyer Darboe called on Gambians to be part of the peaceful demonstration starting from Jah oil in Banjul to the National Assembly in Banjul.

He pointed out that when this kind of activity happens, some criminals always want to capitalise on the occasion to get involved in the crowd and act unlawfully and be destructive. However, the UDP leader said they would be very vigilant to those people while calling on the police to also help in identifying such criminals.

The country’s biggest opposition leader emphasised that everyone knows that UDP is a law-abiding party, calling on the party militants to follow the rule of law, ignore insults and other confrontations.

“I call on Gambians who are concerned about corruption to join us, especially the UDP supporters,” he added. “The demonstration will start from 11 a.m to 2 pm. Everyone should come out to show their concerns on corruption.”

2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Sierra Leone unveil 38-man squad ahead Super Eagles game

Leone Stars of Liberia head coach John Keister has unveiled his 38-man provisional squad, ahead of their Group A 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The names of the 38 shortlisted players was posted on the Sierra Leone Football Association Twitter handle.

The list comprise 12 foreign-based players and 26 home-based players.

Keister is expected to reduce the list before the game against the Super Eagles.

Sierra Leone will host the Super Eagles in Monrovia Liberia on Sunday, June 8 for match-day five of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

The decision to play the game in Liberia is due to Sierra Leone’s inability to provide a suitable venue.

In their first meeting in the qualifiers in June 2022 in Abuja, the Super Eagles came from a goal down to beat Sierra Leone 2-1.

The Super Eagles, who have nine points, top Group A after four games, while Sierra Leone are third with five points.

Meanwhile, the first and second teams from the group will qualify for next year’s AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.
