The Gambia Police Intervention Unit Accused of Manhandling

Police Intervention Unit (PIU) are accused of manhandling accused some accused persons as the case involving Killa Ace Gambian artist and 36 others.

The accused persons face eight counts including unlawful assembly, prohibition of conduct conducive to breaches of the peace, arson and rioters demolishing building.

Dozens of PIU officers were present at Tuesday’s court hearing at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, with some PIU officers spotted throwing some accused persons to a waiting police van within the court’s premises.

However, police say the accused resisted to board the waiting van.

Some angry youth were shouting and saying: “You guys should learn a lesson from the past regime. We are all seeing what’s currently going on at the TRRC. Before arresting people why not you tell us the people that killed Ousman Darboe,” they queried.

The late Ousman Darboe wife’s was also seen within the premises of the court.

Alieu Bah and some activists also took the main highway marching towards Banjul and demanding the unconditional release of all the 37 arrested youths.

“We will not allow anybody to take us to those days of Yahya Jammeh even if it means giving our lives,” Dabakh Malick, an activist said during an interview.

He said: “So many people have lost their lives and others went into exiles during the former regime and others lost their lives just to bring in Barrow’s government,” he added, saying that “if they think they are in power and that they have The ECOMIG and soldiers, we have our rights and we’re going to stand here in the Gambia and fight for those rights. Nobody is taking us back to the days of dictatorship.”

“I am not standing here to defend anybody who did arson, but even whereas the person is going through court process; even if he is guilty; he is a human being, he needs to be treated with utmost respect. However, you can’t be slapping and kicking people just because they’re inmates.”

According to him majority of the young people that were present on the ground were agitated because they don’t have jobs. “They’re agitated because they’re frustrated and they lost hopes in this country. Don’t allow the authority to use you and you are brutalising people.”

“Today in our presence, we saw you beating our own people. They’re accused persons and it’s wrong for you to beat them,” Kexx Sanneh said,

“We are ready to fight against dictatorship in the country and we’re not going to entertain it anymore. We are tired. We stood here when you people are supporting Yahya Jammeh and fought against dictatorship. In fact, most of you were enablers during the former regime.”

“We must all resist. Gambians youth must go out and take this country from our failed politicians,” Alieu Bah stated.

Anger in Nigeria as South Africa xenophobic attacks spark looting

Anti-foreigner attacks in Johannesburg has triggered violence and massive looting of South African-owned brands in Nigeria.

Angry protesters set fire to many entrances leading into a busy mall housing South African retail store Shoprite and looted groceries and toiletries from the supermarket in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial center.
Another outlet belonging to the chain and one owned by South African mobile company MTN were vandalized in Ibadan city in southwest Nigeria on Tuesday despite appeals from the government for peace.
MTN Nigeria also sent messages to its employees to work from home in view of the attacks on some of its facilities.
On Wednesday, police fired teargas to disperse a horde of rioters gathered outside many South African-owned outlets in Surulere, a bustling district in Lagos.
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed said Nigerian investors own significant stakes in South African companies operating in the country and the majority of their employees are also Nigerians.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has dispatched a Special Envoy to convey to his South African counterpart, President Cyril Ramaphosa, his concerns and also interact with his South African counterpart on the situation,” Mohammed said.
Nigerian music stars Burna Boy and singer Tiwa Savage have also weighed into what has escalated into a diplomatic row between both countries.
Savage canceled an upcoming performance in late September. She said the xenophobic violence provoked the decision.
South Africa is facing criticism over a fresh wave of violence against African immigrants and foreign-owned businesses.
Angry mobs looted, burned and vandalized shops, properties, and vehicles, after violence flared Sunday. South Africa police say five people were killed and 189 people allegedly involved in the violence have been arrested. Many foreign-owned stores were targeted in the violence.
Xenophobic and anti-immigrant attacks are not new in South Africa. Demonstrators forced hundreds of foreigners from their homes and looted some businesses in Durban in April.
They claimed that foreigners had taken jobs that should have been filled by locals.
In 2017, violent anti-immigrant protests broke out in the capital Pretoria and in 2015, several people were killed, and thousands fled after xenophobic attacks across the country.

PRESIDENT BARROW VISITS GAMBIAN OWNED AGRIC BUSINESSES IN KOMBO SOUTH

His Excellency, President Adama Barrow spent part of his weekend visiting Gambian owned agribusiness farms in the Kombo South to show support and encourage more Gambians to engage in Agriculture as a business venture.

At the G-Farms Complex in Gunjur Sambuya, the President was told that it is one of the biggest mix farming agribusinesses in The Gambia dealing in poultry and animal husbandry.

The farm has a production capacity of 36, 700 layers that produce 2000 crates of eggs per day, over 10, 000 chicken broilers for meat, and more than 120 heads of goats and sheep.

The founder of the business, 26-year old Muhammed Sanyang, who took the President on a conducted tour of the facilities, explained that he started the business when he was going to school, with just five chickens. Today, he employs more than seventy (70) young Gambians operating one of the most successful businesses in the country.

The President also visited Amie’s Ranch in Tujereng, which is another Gambian-owned agribusiness. The farm owner Jerreh Sonko told the President that they specialise in milk production and crossbreeding of cattle, the Montbeliard and Holstein breeds. He also said that the farm rears deers, goats and sheep.

At present, the milk production capacity of the farm is 300 liters, which they are planning to double in the future.

President Barrow was quite pleased with what he saw in these farms and pledged his government’s support and assistance to develop the sector. The owners of both farms were visibly happy about the President’s interest in their businesses.

INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT THE NIGERIAN JUST MADE MINISTER IN BRITAIN, KEMI ADEGOKE-BADENOCH

Nigeria will destroy you, make you useless and kill your dream unless you have a strong connection to the political godfathers.

I have met Kemi Adegoke-Badenoch in 2010 while she was distributing flyers of her election campaign to passersby around Dulwich Library in 2010. She was contesting for a member of the London Assembly. She didn’t win and She was 30years old at the time.

In 2012, Kemi Adegoke stood for the Conservatives party in the London Assembly election where she was placed fifth on the London-wide list.

In 2017, Kemi was elected as MP for the Saffron Walden constituency and became the first woman to represent that constituency.

Former Prime Minister, Theresa May, appointed Kemi Adegoke-Badenoch as the Conservative Party’s Vice-Chair for Candidates in January 2018.

Today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed Olukemi Adegoke- Badenoch, aged 39, as Children and Families Minister.

Though Kemi was born in London but grew up in Nigeria where she finished her primary and secondary education and returned to the UK for her university education but why Kemi was able to win elections into London Assembly, House of Commons and became a Minister in a country she arrived at age 16?

The answers are simple. Kemi is living in a country where hard work is rewarded. A country where good university grades are rewarded with good jobs. A country where merits are sought after. A country where politicians are elected based on their debates, ideas and manifestos.

Would Kemi have become a councillor in Lagos or Ibadan by relying on her brilliance and articulation of ideas without employing the service of Agberos to snatch ballots or beat up voters, warm the beds of a few political godfathers and agreed to a percentage of her income as a political office holder be shared with her political godfathers every month?
